quotations about autumn
Behold the grapes and all the fruits that Autumn gives today,
As robed in red and gold, she rules, the Empress of Decay!
HENRY ABBEY
"Autumn Ballad"
I've always loved fall ... and the older I get, the more I fall in love with this magical (and heartbreakingly short) season. Not only does fall feel like a fresh start to me more than the new year ever does, the world around (most of) us literally starts changing colors, clothes get cuter, drinks get tastier, soup starts to sound good again, and we get to enjoy Halloween and Thanksgiving (two holidays that are primarily about eating good food) back-to-back. Plus, as much as it sucks when fall is over, it just means we get to jump right into celebrating the winter holidays. It's basically the perfect season.... So every year, no matter how much I try to stay in the moment and enjoy the last leg of summer, I just can't wait for fall to arrive. If visions of pumpkin spice lattes and chunky sweaters are already dancing in your head despite the August heat, then you know exactly what I'm talking about.

O Autumn, laden with fruit, and stain'd
With the blood of the grape, pass not, but sit
Beneath my shady roof, there thou mayest rest,
And tune thy jolly voice to my fresh pipe,
And all the daughters of the year shall dance!
Sing now the lusty song of fruits and flowers.
WILLIAM BLAKE
"To Autumn"
Autumn, the tunnel to winter, the escape from summer, is evidence that it is not how you start that matters, but how you finish.... One September day the sun is burning craters in your head through those little ventilating holes in your golf cap; the next day you are wearing wool socks and a way-too-big old Phish hoodie and chugging hot chocolate at the JV soccer game.
GEORGE HESSELBERG
"Autumn is a vision of glory from start to finish", Wisconsin State Journal, September 19, 2015
Now Autumn's fire burns slowly along the woods,
And day by day the dead leaves fall and melt,
And night by night the monitory blast
Wails in the key-hole, telling how it pass'd
O'er empty fields, or upland solitudes,
Or grim wide wave; and now the power is felt
Of melancholy, tenderer in its moods
Than any joy indulgent summer dealt.
Dear friends, together in the glimmering eve,
Pensive and glad, with tones that recognize
The soft invisible dew in each one's eyes,
It may be, somewhat thus we shall have leave
To walk with memory, when distant lies
Poor Earth, where we were wont to live and grieve.
WILLIAM ALLINGHAM
"Autumnal Sonnet"
Autumn ... painted the countryside in vivid shades of scarlet, saffron and russet, and the days were clear and crisp under harvest skies.
SHARON KAY PENMAN
Time and Chance
Summer's cheek too soon turns thin,
Days grow briefer, sunshine rare;
Autumn from his cannekin
Blows the froth to chase Despair.
JAMES RUSSELL LOWELL
"Scherzo"
As a man passes into middle life, or beyond it, autumn, it has been said, whispers more to his soul than any other season of the natural year. It is not difficult to see why this should be.
HENRY PARRY LIDDON
Sermons Preached Before the University of Oxford
On one very special weekend in Autumn -- the only such time in the calendar year -- the clocks go back, giving us all an extra 60 minutes of much-needed rest. Autumn is a comforting, kindly lie-in -- not like that dastardly time-thief Spring.
MARK BUTLER
"15 Reasons Why Autumn is Actually the Best Season", Wow 24/7, October 1, 2015
Methinks I see the sunset light flooding the river valley, the western hills stretching to the horizon, overhung with trees gorgeous and glowing with the tints of autumn--a mighty flower garden blossoming under the spell of the enchanter, frost.
JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER
Tales and Sketches
How are the veins of thee, Autumn, laden?
Umbered juices,
And pulped oozes
Pappy out of the cherry-bruises,
Froth the veins of thee, wild, wild maiden.
With hair that musters
In globed clusters,
In tumbling clusters, like swarthy grapes,
Round thy brow and thine ears o'ershaden;
With the burning darkness of eyes like pansies,
Like velvet pansies
Where through escapes
The splendid might of thy conflagrate fancies;
With robe gold-tawny not hiding the shapes
Of the feet whereunto it falleth down,
Thy naked feet unsandalled;
With robe gold-tawny that does not veil
Feet where the red
Is meshed in the brown,
Like a rubied sun in a Venice-sail.
FRANCIS THOMPSON
"A Corymbus for Autumn"
Autumn has come;
Storming now heaveth the deep sea with foam,
Yet would I gratefully lie there,
Willingly die there.
ESAIAS TEGNER
Fridthjof's Saga
A real feast for the senses, autumn is a time of plenty in every imaginable way.
JUDI MCLEOD

The magic of autumn has seized the countryside; now that the sun isn't ripening anything it shines for the sake of the golden age; for the sake of Eden; to please the moon for all I know.
ELIZABETH COATSWORTH
Personal Geography
They say autumn is the most honest season. Leaves and flowers fall away to reveal what lies beneath.

Autumn, with its glowing tints, binds up the year; so Time, with noiseless step, binds up our lives.
